From Backyard to Oasis: How We Created Our Dream Outdoor Retreat
Sometimes the best home projects start with a simple idea.
For us, it started with a vision: transforming an unused section of our backyard into a relaxing outdoor oasis where we could unwind, enjoy the evenings, and spend more time outside. Like most projects, it began with a little preparation.
Giving Our Boxwood a New Home
One of the first tasks was relocating a boxwood shrub that was already growing in the area where we planned to build the deck. Rather than removing it entirely, we decided to save it and give it a new home.
We purchased a planter from Lowe's, but there was one problem—it wasn't the color we wanted. Before planting, we gave the planter a fresh coat of paint to better match the look we envisioned for the space.
Once the paint had dried, we carefully dug up the boxwood and replanted it in its new home. It was a small step, but it instantly made the project feel real.
Preparing the Space
Next came the less glamorous part of the project: cleaning up the backyard and preparing the area for construction.
We spent time removing debris, clearing the space, and leveling the ground where the deck would eventually sit. While it wasn't the most exciting stage, it laid the foundation for everything that followed.Every shovel of dirt moved brought us one step closer to the backyard retreat we had imagined.
Building the Deck
Once the site was ready, the builders arrived and got to work.Watching the deck come together was exciting. What had been an empty section of yard quickly transformed into a functional outdoor living space.
With the structure complete, we could finally begin imagining how it would look furnished and decorated.
Staining the Deck
A beautiful deck deserves a beautiful finish.
After construction was complete, we stained the deck to protect the wood and enhance its natural appearance. The stain added warmth, character, and durability while helping the deck blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
This step made a huge difference in the overall appearance of the project.
Adding Lighting and Comfort
Once the stain had cured, it was time for the fun part.
We installed lighting around the deck to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for evenings outdoors. The soft glow completely changed the feel of the space after sunset.
To make the deck comfortable and relaxing, we furnished it with Papasan chairs from Amazon. Their oversized cushions and cozy design instantly turned the deck into a place where we wanted to spend hours reading, talking, or simply enjoying the view.
The Finished Result
What started as a simple idea became one of our favorite areas of the home.
From relocating a boxwood and repainting a planter to building, staining, lighting, and furnishing the deck, every step brought us closer to creating a space we truly love.
Now, instead of looking at an unused section of backyard, we have a beautiful outdoor retreat that feels like an extension of our home.
The project took time, effort, and patience, but seeing the finished result makes it all worthwhile.
Sometimes all it takes is a vision—and the willingness to take the first step—to create something special.
